Green Diet: Important Things To Learn From A Bunny

Say hello to Caramel! Our new pet bunny.

It's our first time to take care of bunnies. Thankfully, there's google to get loads of info on how to take care of rabbits.

I found out that rabbits' food diet is very healthy.
1. Hay - Fresh hay should make up most of the rabbits' diet. Hay or the grass that grow in our backyard gives them good source of protein and fiber. It helps them have a good digestive system and helps them wear out their teeth (which continuously grows) for good dental health. No problem feeding these bunnies as we have heaps of grass at the backyard.

2.  Vegetables - Rabbits are known to have carrots as their favorite food. But I found out that it should be given to rabbits only sparingly as it's high in calcium. Wash the vegetables first and make sure it's free of pesticides. Here's the list:
 - Basil
 - Broccoli leaves (stems or tops can make rabbits gassy)
 - Carrot tops (carrots are high in calcium and should be given sparingly)
 - Celery
 - Cilantro
 - Dill
 - Romaine Lettuce or Dark Leaf (no iceberg and no cabbage)
 - Mustard Greens
 - Parsely
 - Water cress
Remember to toss some to your bunnies if you have these vegetables in your kitchen.

3. Pellets - Purchase fresh pellets and look for high fiber and low in protein. Adult rabbits should have a limited intake of pellets as she ages. Diets high in protein can lead to obesity and other rabbit health issues.

4. Treats - Like you, rabbits like treats every now and then. Give them fruits as the best option for a treat. But again, give only in small amounts because of the sugar content. Be sure to wash it first and no pesticides please .
Your rabbit may enjoy these fruits:
 - strawberries
 - raspberries
 - bananas
 - pineapple
 - apples (no seeds)

5. Water - Fresh clean water should always be available to your rabbits. An ice cube or two in their water may be helpful to ease your rabbit in a hot day. It's also good to leave the vegetables fairly wet if you think that your rabbit is not drinking enough water.

Important reminder 1: Don't give your rabbit food that are high in carbohydrates such as bread, crackers, pasta, cookies, cereals or chips.

Important reminder 2: Never give them chocolates as they are toxic to rabbits.

What have you learned from the rabbit's diet?
1. Protein and fiber-rich food
3. low in sugar and carbo
2. Vegetables and fruits
3. Lots of water
I'm not a bunny so I can eat chocolates and chips all I want hehe :D
